O cenário econômico da Revolução de 1923 (Rio Grande do Sul) : mudança estrutural, crescimento e crise da pecuária

Abstract

O artigo apresenta o cenário econômico, mas também social e político, da Revolução de 1923 no Rio Grande do Sul. Para tanto, toma como referência, na primeira seção, uma visão geral sobre a transformação da economia estadual na 1ª República (1889-1930), indicando os determinantes de sua mudança estrutural. A seção seguinte enfoca os dois grandes projetos políticos em disputa na sociedade estadual. A terceira seção enfoca a crise da pecuária após a 1ª Guerra Mundial e suas relações imediatas com a Revolução de 1923. O artigo busca realizar, por um lado, uma abordagem de história econômica, considerando a evolução da economia estadual na longa duração, com foco nos determinantes do processo de desenvolvimento. Por outro lado, trata de explorar os movimentos da conjuntura econômica, que afetam imediatamente os agentes sociais e se conectam diretamente aos juízos morais e ações políticas.

The article presents the economic, but also social and political, background of the 1923 Revolution in the region of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). For that purpose, it takes as a reference, in the first section, an overview of the transformation of the regional economy in 1st Republic (1889-1930), indicating the determinants of its structural change. The following section focuses on the two major political projects in conflict in the regional society. The third section focuses on the crisis of ranching and the preparation of jerked beef activities after the 1st World War and its immediate relations with the 1923 Revolution. The article seeks to accomplish, on the one hand, an approach to economic history, considering the evolution of the regional economy in the long term, focusing the determinants of the development process. On the other hand, tryes to explore the movements of the economic situation, which immediately affect the social agents and connect them directly to moral judgments and political actions.
