Abstract
Clinker and cement are currently in high demand as key commodities in the global market. However, the manufacturing of cement is an inherently CO2-intensive process and the emissions associated with cement production will continue to increase as cement production continues to rise. Despite the large number of novel technologies and materials that are being studied, Portland cement-based materials are likely to remain dominant in the global market. In this context, Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS) technologies are portrayed as one of the alternatives with the higher potential to reduce the environmental impact on cement and concrete industries. With CCUS being a major topic in the global climate change agenda, many companies are exploring this area, and it is important to discuss the full range of existing initiatives. The present study provides a comprehensive review of the current initiatives related to CCU in the construction industry, focusing on cement and concrete. In this study, the status of carbonation in concrete structures as a method of carbon capture, and an overview of the status of CCUS development globally were accessed. Also, the main methods of carbon capture in the cement industry and the commercial processes that utilize the carbon captured on cements and concretes are discussed. Lastly, the study highlights the global development of these technologies and outlines the key challenges that need to be addressed to advance the CCUS technology further. ...
