Hilary Putnam e a rejeição do realismo metafísico : relatividade conceitual e a interdependência de fatos e valores

Abstract

Este trabalho tem como objetivo fornecer um retrato de um período de "transposição de doutrinas" do filósofo americano Hilary Putnam (1926 – 2016). Mais precisamente, o seu abandono e rejeição da tese ontológica do "Realismo Metafísico" em favor de um "Realismo Interno" tentando expor quais parecem ter sido algumas das principais consequências do seu embarque nessa nova concepção teórica. Para isso, procederei em analisar seus argumentos dispostos principalmente durante a década de 80, em diversas obras, mas principalmente em Razão, História e Verdade, de 1981. Parte da preocupação de Putnam nesse livro, conforme ele anuncia em seu prefácio, é de argumentar contra certas dicotomias tradicionais presentes tanto na prática filosófica, quanto no senso comum que, diz ele, são infundadas e errôneas. Entre elas estão, a mente e o mundo, as visões objetivas e subjetivas da verdade e, especialmente, a separação de fatos e valores. Essas dicotomias, argumenta, estão permeadas equivocadamente no nosso pensamento de tal maneira em consequência de uma visão ontológica profundamente enraizada e influente, a do Realismo Metafísico. Uma vez que conseguimos reconhecer a nossa inexorável dependência de nossos esquemas conceituas, como a proposta pelo Realismo Interno, é possível visionar um sistema sensato de ajuizamento dos nossos mais diferentes tipos de problemas; suficientemente flexíveis, coesos e capazes de desenvolver concepções de verdade, racionalidade e objetividade mais sensatas que aquelas que nos envolvem atualmente.

This work aims to provide a picture of a phase of "transposition of doctrines" by the american philosopher Hilary Putnam (1926 – 2016). Namely, his abandonment and rejection of the ontological thesis known as "Metaphysical Realism", in favour of an alternative, which he called "Internal Realism". I'll be seeking to investigate what were the consequences of his new endeavor into this different ontological perspective. To achieve that, my approach will be to analyse his arguments as he arranged them specially during the 80's, in many works, but mainly on his book Reason, Truth and History, of 1981. Part of Putnam's concerns in this book, as he states in the preface, is to argue against certain traditional dichotomies, evenly pervasive both in the philosophical practice and in the common sense which, he affirms, are groundless and erroneous. Among them are, the Mind and the World division, the Objective and Subjetive visions of the world and, specially, the division of Facts and Values. Those dichotomies, says Putnam, are defined and entrenched in our thoughts in such a misleading way in consequence of an extremely deep and influential ontological vision, that of the Metaphysical Realist. Once we are able to realize the inexorable ways in which we are dependent on our conceptual schemes, as proposed by Internal Realism, it is possible to envision a more fruitful system of judgments of our many different types of problems. A system that is flexible, coherent and in a position to build up conceptions of Truth, Rationality and Objectivity that are more effective than those that keep us on hold right now.
