Pontuação : um breve olhar diacrônico

Abstract

O objetivo deste trabalho é traçar um panorama da história dos sinais de pontuação, desde o contexto histórico que propiciou o seu surgimento, até chegar à tradição gramatical, a fim de compreender como se deu a sistematização de seu uso. Para realizar essa investigação, em um primeiro momento conto um pouco da história de minha inquietude com o tema da pontuação, que serve de mote para que se construa este trabalho. Em seguida, partindo de um levantamento bibliográfico de textos que falam sobre história da escrita e da leitura, há a contextualização histórica da trajetória da escrita, em diálogo com a tradição de leitura oral, que favoreceu o surgimento dos sinais de pontuação. Depois, é o percurso dos sinais de pontuação que ganha destaque, a fim de compreender que eventos serviram de base para construir o sistema de pontuação atual. Nessa investigação, torna-se evidente que a sistematização da pontuação como a conhecemos hoje é um dos frutos do processo de gramatização, que é o tema do capítulo seguinte: o conceito de gramatização e a história da gramática. Nessa parte do trabalho, é a tradição de investigação da linguagem greco-romana que entra em foco, desde o começo da preocupação dos filósofos em compreender a natureza da linguagem, até a criação da disciplina gramatical, que serve como base para a construção das gramáticas contemporâneas, e que sistematizou o uso dos sinais de pontuação. Em seguida, a fim de analisar de que forma foi sistematizado esse uso – e, por consequência, de que forma se entende a pontuação –, faço a análise de três gramáticas normativas da língua portuguesa que utilizam diferentes orientações teóricas para balizar seus estudos. Nessa análise, desvela-se que a pontuação é, majoritariamente, compreendida unicamente como representante da fala, como sinais que recuperam na escrita as pausas e a melodia que são características da língua falada, ou como auxiliar da sintaxe, sinais que servem à clareza do texto, organizando as relações e proporções dos constituintes da frase, a fim de garantir a solidariedade sintática e semântica. Por fim, se torna evidente que a história da pontuação é, também, a história da escrita, da leitura e da gramática – mas não apenas isso.

The aim of this work is to provide an overview of the history of punctuation marks, tracing their evolution from the historical context that gave rise to their existence to the grammatical tradition, in order to understand how their usage was systematized. To conduct this investigation, I initially recount my personal interest in punctuation as a starting point for constructing this study. Subsequently, based on a literature review of texts discussing the history of writing and reading, there is a historical contextualization of the trajectory of writing, in dialogue with the tradition of oral reading, which facilitated the advent of punctuation marks. Next, the journey of punctuation marks becomes the main topic with the aim to understand the events that served as the foundation for constructing the current punctuation system. Throughout this investigation, it becomes evident that the systematization of punctuation as we know it is one of the outcomes of the process of grammatisation, which is the subject of the following chapter: the concept of grammatisation and the history of grammar. In this section of the work, the focus shifts to the tradition of Greco-Roman linguistic investigation, spanning from the philosophers' early concerns about comprehending the nature of language to the establishment of grammatical discipline, which serves as the basis for contemporary grammar construction and the systematization of punctuation mark usage. Subsequently, to analyze how this usage was systematized – and consequently, how punctuation is understood – an examination is conducted on three normative grammars of the Portuguese language that employ different theoretical frameworks to guide their studies. Through this analysis, it is revealed that punctuation is predominantly understood either as a representation of speech, as marks that replicate in writing the pauses and melody inherent to spoken language, or as aids to syntax – marks that contribute to the clarity of the text by organizing the relationships and proportions of sentence constituents, ensuring syntactic and semantic coherence. Ultimately, it becomes evident that the history of punctuation is also the history of writing, reading, and grammar – but not solely that.
