José Alcântara : um escultor na pegada da onça

Abstract

Com este trabalho, buscou-se investigar a obra e a trajetória do escultor José Alcântara, amazônida nato. Alcântara destaca-se no campo da arte popular no Amazonas, como escultor em madeiras da região. A sua produção está voltada à representação de animais nativos da Floresta Amazônica, com ênfase na onçapintada, que se tornou sua verdadeira marca. A pesquisa encontra-se pautada na observação de seu contexto de vida, sua formação, seu imaginário e seu fazer artístico, levando em consideração aspectos técnicos, processuais e de produção iconográfica, com vistas à reflexão do que se propõe como problema de pesquisa: como se deu o estabelecimento de José Alcântara como escultor no campo das artes visuais, no contexto cultural do estado do Amazonas? Ainda que se trate de um artista que é referência na região, não existem estudos acerca de sua produção, de modo que permanece no anonimato em meio à historiografia regional. Alcântara possui múltiplas habilidades em artes visuais, como o desenho e a escultura; é detentor de técnicas escultóricas tanto em madeira quanto em cimento e ferro. Mas suas esculturas são predominantemente em madeiras da região, conferindo às peças, de gênero animalista, estilo próprio, uma vez que são elaboradas em peça inteiriça, sem emendas, pregos, de maneira que as bases de sustenção das esculturas incorporamnas. Com vistas a atender ao proposto, o presente estudo está estruturado em quatro capítulos, a saber: o primeiro, intitulado Amazônia: homem, águas e floresta, apresenta o contexto amazônico onde nasceu e viveu o escultor; o segundo, denominado No berço das águas e da floresta, apresenta elementos da dimensão da vida e do início do fazer artístico de José Alcântara; o terceiro, nomeado O caminho para a escultura, apresenta as temáticas da obra do artista, seu processo e estilo de trabalho; o quarto, A tradição Alcântara e o reconhecimento da obra, envolve a circulação e reconhecimento da obra.

With this work, we sought to investigate the work and trajectory of the sculptor José Alcântara, a native Amazonian. Alcântara stands out in the field of popular art in the Amazon, as a wood sculptor from the region. His production is focused on the representation of animals native to the Amazon Rainforest, with an emphasis on the jaguar, which became his true trademark. The research is based on the observation of his life context, his education, his imagination and his artistic work, taking into account technical, procedural and iconographic production aspects, with a view to reflecting on what is proposed as a research problem: how took place the establishment of José Alcântara as a sculptor in the field of visual arts, in the cultural context of the state of Amazonas? Although he is an artist who is a reference in the region, there are no studies about his production, so he remains anonymous in the midst of regional historiography. Alcântara has multiple skills in visual arts such as drawing and sculpture. He also has sculptural techniques both in wood and in cement and iron, but his sculptures are predominantly in wood from the region, giving the pieces, of an animalistic genre, their own style, since they are made in a whole piece, without amendments, nails, in that the support base of the sculptures incorporates them. With a view to meeting the proposal, this study is structured in four chapters, namely: the first, entitled Amazônia: man, waters and forest, presents the Amazonian context where the sculptor was born and lived; the second, called In the cradle of the waters and the forest, presents elements of the dimension of life and the beginning of José Alcântara's artistic work; the third, named The path to sculpture, presents the themes of the artist's work, his process and style of work; the fourth, The Alcântara tradition and the recognition of the work, involves the circulation and recognition of the work.
