Revoltas escravas na primeira metade do século XIX : o Brasil na era das revoluções

Abstract

O objetivo da presente monografia é investigar por quais razões, ao longo da história da escravidão brasileira, a quase totalidade das revoltas escravas ocorreram na primeira metade do século XIX. Para tanto, sugiro algumas hipóteses a serem testadas. Nesse sentido, a Era das Revoluções aparece como possível variável explicativa desse processo histórico, juntamente às mediações internas de cada localidade. Na tentativa de captar os ecos revolucionários vindos do atlântico, procedeu-se a análise acerca da “comunidade atlântica”, de uma “rede negra de informações”, da “politização do cotidiano” e do “haitianismo” no Brasil na primeira metade do Oitocentos. Como base para esse movimento, buscamos a historiografia sobre escravidão e sobre o século XIX produzida tanto no Brasil quanto noutras partes do mundo Atlântico. A obra de Emília Viotti da Costa serviu de referência enquanto perspectiva histórica, na medida em que permitiu testar um olhar tanto macro quanto micro, no nível das estruturas e da agência, ao cenário brasileiro então analisado. O trabalho está assentado essencialmente em revisão bibliográfica. Os resultados obtidos pela pesquisa, ainda preliminares, sugerem que no começo do XIX certa forma de “ser e estar” no mundo foi conformada a partir da era revolucionária e seus diferentes desdobramentos. Nesse sentido, novas sociabilidades e perspectivas políticas surgiram naquele período histórico, favorecendo a eclosão de movimentos de revolta, tanto livre quanto escrava. Portanto, ainda que as forças históricas não determinem a ação humana, os homens e mulheres daquele tempo beneficiaram-se de certo “espaço de experiência revolucionário”, que se fazia presente em diferentes margens do Atlântico.

The objective of the present monograph is to investigate why, throughout the history of Brazilian slavery, almost all slave revolts occurred in the first half of the 19th century. To this end, it suggests some hypotheses to be tested. In this sense, the Age of Revolutions appears as a possible explanatory variable of this historical process, together with the internal mediations of each locality. In an attempt to capture the revolutionary echoes coming from the Atlantic, we proceeded with the analysis of the “Atlantic community”, of a “black information network”, of the “politicization of daily life” and of “Haitianism” in Brazil in the first half of the 19th century. As a basis for this movement, we look to the historiography on slavery and on the nineteenth century produced both in Brazil and in other parts of the Atlantic world. The work of Emília Viotti da Costa served as a reference as a historical perspective, insofar as it allowed us to test both a macro and micro look, at the level of structures and agency, at the Brazilian scenario then under analysis. The work is essentially based on a bibliographical review. The results obtained by the research, still preliminary, suggest that at the beginning of the 19th century a certain way of “being and being” in the world was shaped by the revolutionary era and its different developments. In this sense, new sociabilities and political perspectives emerged in that historical period, favoring the outbreak of revolt movements, both free and slave. Therefore, even if historical forces do not determine human action, the men and women of that time benefited from a certain “space of revolutionary experience” that was present in different shores of the Atlantic.
