In/visibilidades : a constituição dos mundos trans nos transgender studies e nas comunidades do Reddit

Abstract

Esta dissertação busca investigar as disputas políticas e de sentido que emergem dos acionamentos sobre a in/visibilidade transgênero em comunidades no Reddit. Para compreender as perspectivas e os contextos em que ocorrem os embates entre os públicos trans em comunidades na plataforma de fóruns Reddit, partimos de uma abrangente revisão dos transgender studies e procuramos identificar seus principais movimentos teóricos, em especial suas distinções frente aos feminismos e à teoria queer. Ao delinear o desenvolvimento dos trans studies, buscamos salientar as controvérsias e dissidências entre os projetos identitários transexual e transgênero, apoiados particularmente em autores como Stone (2014), Bornstein (1994), Halberstam (1998), Stryker (2006; 2017) e Bettcher (2012; 2014). Após caracterizar a formação de comunidades digitais no Reddit e examinar o ecossistema de fóruns utilizados por pessoas trans nessa plataforma, realizamos uma etnografia digital para coletar, mapear e analisar comentários, testemunhos e depoimentos dessas pessoas trans. Em nossa análise, confrontamos os pontos de encontro e de divergência entre os trans studies e os públicos trans do Reddit, utilizando como eixos analíticos as instabilidades do dispositivo de “passar” por cisgênero; a polarização entre alteridade e representatividade provocada pela visibilidade da variação de gênero; e os banheiros públicos como ambientes contestados e indecidíveis onde as problemáticas da gênero-divergência irrompem na sociedade. Por fim, demonstramos que os projetos identitários dos trans studies ainda não produziram teorias que abarquem de forma suficiente a multiplicidade de experiências trans, e percebemos nas comunidades de pessoas trans do Reddit as ansiedades existenciais, relacionais, e os pontos cegos teóricos que demandam a continuidade das pesquisas na academia.

This dissertation aims to investigate political and meaning disputes that emerge from transgender in/visibilities in Reddit communities. To understand the perspectives and contexts in which occur clashes among trans people in Reddit forums, we start from a comprehensive review of transgender studies and seek to identify their main theoretical movements, in particular their distinctions from feminisms and queer theory. In outlining the development of trans studies, and supported particularly by authors such as Stone (2014), Bornstein (1994), Halberstam (1998), Stryker (2006; 2017) and Bettcher (2012; 2014), we try to highlight the controversies and frictions between transsexual and transgender identity projects. After characterizing the formation of digital communities on Reddit and examining the forums used by trans people on this platform, we conducted a digital ethnography to collect, map and analyze comments and testimonials of these trans people. In our analysis, we confront convergences and divergences between trans studies and trans audiences on Reddit, using as analytical axes the instabilities of cisgender “passing”; the polarization between otherness and representativeness caused by the visibility of gender variation; and public bathrooms as contested and undecidable spaces where gender issues erupt in society. Finally, we demonstrate that trans studies’ identity projects haven’t yet created theories that sufficiently encompass the multiplicity of trans experiences, and we notice in Reddit's trans people communities existential and relational anxieties, and theoretical blind spots, that demand the continuity of research in the academy.
