O desejo de transcender a morte : um estudo de Ar frio, Os fatos do caso do sr. Valdemar e O retrato de Dorian Gray

Abstract

O presente trabalho faz um comentário sobre o desejo de transcender a morte e como esse desejo aparece refletido na literatura. Como corpus para estudo dessas reflexões são utilizados os contos “Ar frio”, de H. P. Lovecraft e “Os fatos do caso do Sr. Valdemar”, de Edgar Allan Poe, bem como a novela O retrato de Dorian Gray, de Oscar Wilde. As considerações sobre o medo de morrer e a busca pelo poder se constroem através da observação dos comportamentos das personagens do narrador em primeira pessoa e do Dr. Munõz, na primeira história; do narrador magnetista e do Sr. Valdemar, na segunda; e de Dorian Gray, na novela de Wilde. Em cada caso, a tentativa de ultrapassar os limites da vida é posta em prática da forma como é possível fazer. Porém, ao buscar a imortalidade, as vidas afetadas adquirem limitações que prejudicam sua qualidade, acabando por transformar o viver em sobreviver e chegando, por fim, ao fracasso do plano de longevidade das personagens, que vão então ao encontro da morte definitiva. Esse estudo discute as três situações, com base na ideia de que o desejo de transcendência é intrínseco ao ser humano e provém do medo do desconhecido, do instinto de fuga da morte. O trabalho investiga também a ideia de que o ser humano anseia pela expansão de seu domínio e poder, o que o faz querer dominar a única coisa sobre a qual não tem ingerência: a morte.

This work consists of a comment about the wish to transcend death, and about the ways in which this theme is represented in literature. As a corpus for such reflections, we have the short stories “Cool Air”, by H.P. Lovecraft and “The facts in the case of Mr. Valdemar”, by Edgar Allan Poe, and the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. The considerations about the fear of death and the search for power are connected with the observation of the behavior of the following characters: the first person narrator and Dr. Muñoz, in the first story; the magnetist narrator and Mr. Valdemar, in the second; and Dorian Gray, in Wilde’s novel. In each case, the attempt to surpass the limits of life is put to practice in the way allowed by circumstances. However, in the process of seeking immortality, the affected lives acquire limitations that harm their quality, to a point that living turns into surviving. This failure of the longevity plan eventually leads the characters involved in the experiments into death. The present work analyses the three situations on the premises that the desire for transcendence is intrinsic to the human beings and comes from the fear of the unknown, from the instinct to escape from death. The work also investigates the idea that people long for expansion of their domains, and for power, ant that provokes them into conquering the only thing over which they do not have any control: death.
