A representação da peste nas cartas de Petrarca : entre fortuna, medo e esperança

Abstract

Este trabalho visa compreender as maneiras como Petrarca representou a epidemia de Peste na sua correspondência pessoal. Petrarca foi um dos autores mais profícuos do século XIV, compondo a coleção Rerum Familiarum Libri com 350 cartas para amigos próximos e personagens políticos importantes à época. A coleção se insere em um projeto em que Petrarca busca moldar e interpretar seu próprio lugar no mundo, de modo a ficar conhecido para a posterioridade. Os Familiares formam uma espécie de autobiografia, intencional em todos os detalhes, que é o legado moral de Petrarca. Tendo vivenciado dois grandes surtos de Peste, esse tema afetou sua escrita e impactou a formação dos Familiares. Destacam-se aqui as 10 cartas em que trata do assunto, selecionadas para análise neste trabalho considerando que cada carta e a coleção em que ela está inserida funcionam como instrumento de perpetuação de uma intenção ou de um discurso específico. O conceito de representação de Roger Chartier é mobilizado de modo a pensar as construções sociais da realidade, em que Petrarca, a partir de suas intenções, fundamenta sua representação da Peste. Outros três conceitos, Fortuna, Esperança e Medo, são empregados devido à maneira como são utilizados por Petrarca para retratar sua experiência com a Peste, o que permite o entendimento da construção literária de sua representação da Peste. Nessa conjuntura, espera-se demonstrar que a representação da Peste insere-se num contexto bastante complexo e deve ser analisada entre a experiência descrita e a intenção da descrição dessa experiência. O produto dessa representação, ademais, não é único e imutável, e mesmo que sua experiência seja negativa, nem sempre tem resultado negativo.

This work aims to understand the ways in which Petrarch represented the Plague epidemic in his personal correspondence. Petrarch was one of the most prolific authors of the 14th century, composing the collection Rerum Familiarum Libri with 350 letters to close friends and important political figures of the time. The collection is part of a project in which Petrarch seeks to shape and interpret his own place in the world, in order to become known for posterity. The Familiares form a kind of autobiography, intentional in every detail, which is Petrarch's moral legacy. Having experienced two major outbreaks of Plague, this theme affected his writing and impacted the formation of the collection. Highlighted here are the 10 letters that deal with the subject, selected for analysis considering that each letter and the collection in which it is inserted function as an instrument for perpetuating an intention or a specific discourse. Roger Chartier's concept of representation is mobilized in order to think about the social constructions of reality, on which Petrarch, grounded on his interests, bases his representation of the Plague. Three other concepts, Fortune, hope and fear, are mobilized due to the way they are used by Petrarch to portray his experience with the Plague, which allows the understanding of the literary construction of his representation of Plague. At this juncture, I hope to demonstrate that the representation of the Plague is inserted in a very complex context and must be read between the experience described and the intention of describing that experience. The product of this representation, moreover, is not unique and immutable, and even when the Plague experience is negative, it does not always have a negative outcome.
